The principle behind VoIP is simple. Calls are placed over the Internet instead of using dedicated voice lines to do the job. This is easy to understand once we realized that all information can be digitized and sent as a signal over a wire. In fact, this also happens with regular voice - your sound signals are encoded and sent over a wire. With the Internet, such things become easy and voice communication can happen in real time just as with a normal phone.
** Crown Equity Holdings Inc. (CRWE) reported that it has entered into a 50/50 joint venture agreement to deploy VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology delivering voice, video and data services to residential and commercial customers.
The joint venture company is Crown Tele Services Incorporated, which looks forward to building an outstanding team to develop and deliver voice and video over IP services globally.
According to IBISWorld Industry Reports, Digital voice will be the fastest growing U.S. industry in the next five years. Voice over Internet Protocol leads the list of the ten most dynamic industries with revenue in 2010 of nearly $12.5 billion dollars, growth 2000 - 2010 of 194% and forecast growth 2010 - 2016 of 17.6%
VoIP industry is fast augmenting and hence it may assure a definite hike in the revenue generation to any organization that steps into this field.

Asda launches mobile grocery site for smartphones

Posted about 23 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

Asda has launched a mobile optimised transactional grocery site, allowing customers to buy Asda groceries online using a smartphone.

Responding to this trend, Asda's new mobile-optimised site offers all of the features on the main Asda.com grocery website, allowing customers to register, shop and amend an existing order or delivery slot up until 10pm the day before their delivery is due.
Asda's grocery home shopping service has been in operation since 2001 and covers 97% of UK postcodes with deliveries.
The new mobile optimised site also includes a mobile store locator, offering maps and directions so customers can find their nearest Asda when they're out.
Kate Cuthbertson, Asda's head of mobile strategy, said: "The mobile site was an international collaboration between Asda and the Walmart mobile team based in the US. We'll be constantly updating and improving the site over the next few months, with lots more interesting mobile developments to follow soon."
The move follows the launch of the Asda Price Guarantee iPhone App which has been downloaded by more than 250,000 customers since October 2010.

A Summer Lunch For Two

Posted about 21 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

When I was a little girl, I loved day trips. Sometimes it was the beach, other times the countryside. I loved packing lunches and even then, I expected to have multiple courses and snacks to munch on throughout the day. In retrospect, I think food was actually the thing I looked forward to the most, more so than the destination itself.

A few days ago, as I was completely submerged in writing, I looked up at my computer screen. "It is 4 o'clock and I have not left the house all day!" I thought. Seems to happen often these days.
Kids arrived home shortly after. They craved my attention, but my mind was elsewhere. It is hard to come out of your head when you have been in it for so many hours, isn't it? I asked the babysitter to stay a bit longer and I decided to go for a run to clear my head.
I thought of those day trips and the outdoor lunches in the summer heat. Sometimes even on the side of the road, close to a stream, or under an oak tree. I remembered my dad cutting melon slices for all of us while my mom finished her lunch. An array of small plates and nibbles always followed by a tart or shortbread we took from our family's pastry shop.

The following day, I woke up knowing I still had lots of work to do, but thought it would be fun to prepare a quick meal Miren and I could eat outside. Partly for her, but mostly for me. Just to get a break and some fresh air.
We had ripe heirloom tomatoes that I blended into a gazpacho with cucumber, scallions, fresh herbs, and a drizzle of avocado oil. Toasted gluten-free bread , rubbed juicy tomato all over it, and topped it with shaved Idiazabal . Miren's favorite.
We also enjoyed a simple salad with greens, berries, and pan seared salmon. And for dessert, plum and currant crumble.
"One for you, one for me."

Chilled Heirloom Tomato Soup
Serves 2
3 medium heirloom tomatoes, stem removed and diced
1/2 cucumber, diced
3 scallions, diced
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
small bunch of oregano
2 sprigs thyme
salt pepper
avocado oil, to garnish
2 slices toasted bread
Idiazabal or Manchego cheese, shaved
Puree all ingredients in the blender and chill for 1 hour.
Serve with toasted bread rubbed with tomato and shaved Manchego cheese.
Salmon and Berry Salad
Serves 2
8 ounces wild-caught salmon (mine was Coho)
2 cup mixed greens (frisee, baby romaine, watercress, arugula, parsley...)
1/4 cup yellow raspberries
1/4 cup blackberries
1/4 cup red currants
1 scallion, sliced
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for salmon
salt and pepper
In a small saute pan, cook the salmon for 2 minutes (depending on the thickness) with 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium high heat. Flip over and finish cooking for another 2 minutes. Set aside.
In a bowl, toss together the greens and all the berries.
In a small bowl, whisk together the mustard, vinegar and olive oil. Drizzle the vinaigrette over salad. Season with salt. Toss to combine and top with seared salmon pieces.
Red Plum, Currant, and Almond Crumble
Serves 4
1/2 cup (70 grams) superfine brown rice flour
3/4 cup (70 grams) almond meal
1/3 cup (70 grams) natural cane sugar
5 Tbs (70 grams) cold unsalted butter, diced
6 red plums, pit removed and sliced
1/4 cup red currants
1/4 cup white currants
1 Tbs natural cane sugar
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
1 Tbs lemon juice
1 Tbs cornstarch
Preheat oven to 400F (220C).
In the food processor, combine the first four ingredients and pulse until it forms a crumbly sand. Transfer to a bowl and chill until ready to use.
Toss the rest of ingredients in a bowl. Divide amongst 4 (8-ounce) bowls. Top with crumble.
Bake for 30 minutes until filling bubbling and crumble is golden.

Well I was doing some hand painting on the interior of my 1955 Chevy Bel Air, I had a small bottle of paint thinner open to clean my brush out and knocked over the bottle with my arm while reaching for another bottle of paint.
sorry for the bad pic it was with a cell phone.

English Peas, Buckwheat Greens And A Strawberry Tart

Posted about 13 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

It has been quite hectic around here.
During these past couple of weeks, I have had to park my book writing routine aside to focus on a couple of other projects I am super excited about. I wish I could share more, but we will have to wait. All I can say is that it involves a major magazine and I had a blast.
However, all of this has taken a bit of a toll on me.

When I woke up Sunday, I felt as though I had run a marathon. Sore and exhausted.
C. encouraged me to take some time for myself in the morning. He took the kids and I headed to the farmers' market. I find it relaxing to walk around, people watch and get inspired by the produce and talking to the farmers I have come to know this year.

Unfortunately, it was the last day of the market. Yes, when the rest of the country is just now gearing up for their growing season, ours is coming to an end. Well, not exactly. Things will still grow in the summer, but much slower and not so abundant. Most of the farmers I know take the summer off to travel and learn from other farmers.
As it was the last day, I indulged in everything I saw. The usual suspects such as eight ball zucchini, heirloom tomatoes, strawberries, mulberries, farm eggs, kale, beets, english peas... But I also found buckwheat greens .

This was the first time I had even seen buckwheat greens. Beautiful greens with tiny little flowers.
As I started to read about them, I found out that they can be somewhat toxic when consumed in large amounts and that is why they are not recommended in juicing. However, a small amount can be beneficial.
Sunday night, I made a quick soup with English peas and buckwheat greens. The soup was tasty and mild. Spinach or even lettuce would work just as well.

When Monday came around, I was ready to start testing more recipes for the book.
I really feel so lucky to be able to do what I love. Time flies when I am working and enjoy every second of it.
But when time flies, lunch must also be quick. Crushed pea, cherry tomato and goat cheese tartines to go with leftover soup from the night before. I blanched some English peas in salted boiling water, then crushed them with a fork. Mixed with goat cheese, scallions, olive oil, salt and pepper on toasted gluten-free bread.

I was testing a new tart dough and with the leftovers, I made a quick almond and strawberry tartlet that Miren and I had for dessert. Took a couple of chairs outside and had an impromptu picnic in the back lawn.
Then back to work.
English Pea and Buckwheat Greens Soup
Serves 4
2 Tbs olive oil
1 leek, white part only diced
1 garlic clove, minced
1 medium potato, peeled and diced
2 cups shelled peas
2 cups buckwheat greens or spinach
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
5 sprigs thyme leaves
3 cups chicken stock
Goat cheese, optional
Chopped scallions, optional
Olive oil
In a small pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the leek and the garlic and cook for 3 minutes until soft.
Add the rest of the ingredients and bring the liquid to a boil. Cover the pot, reduce heat to medium low and let it simmer for 15 minutes or until soft.
Puree the soup. Serve with chopped scallions, goat cheese, drizzle of olive oil, and toasted bread.

Strawberry and Almond Tart
Makes 6 3-inch tartlets
Pie crust of your choice (mine was gluten free)
? cup (110 g) unsalted butter, room temperature
? cup (110 g) natural cane sugar
1 egg
? tsp almond extract
1 cup (110 g) almond flour
1 Tbs (10 g) tapioca starch
? tsp salt
2 cups sliced strawberries
Pre-heat oven to 400F.
In a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar with the paddle attachment until light. Add the egg and almond extract and mix until combined. Add the dry ingredients and mix.
Roll out the pie dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut 6 4-inch disks and fill tart molds with them. Cut off excess dough.
Fill the tart molds with frangipane and arrange the sliced strawberries on top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until crust golden.

Dear friends,

It's outrageous! This morning, Anna Hazare was arrested as he set out to fast for the Jan Lokpal. The government is trying to repress our clamour to end coruption. Let's show the government we will not be silenced. Sign the urgent petition to free Anna and Free India of Corruption!

It's outrageous! Anna Hazare has been arrested and is being held in an undisclosed location. But as he was taken away he said:

"Don't let my arrest stop this movement. This is the nation's second struggle for freedom."

Let's heed his call to action -- if we all now stand with Anna and show that we will not be silenced, we will force the government to free him and listen to the demands of the people.

Sign the urgent petition to PM Manmohan Singh and Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi to Free Anna, then send this to everyone -- it will be delivered directly to them:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/free_anna/?vl

The government is trying to repress our nation-wide clamour to end corruption. This morning Anna Hazare was arrested by plain clothes policemen as he set out to begin his fast in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill. His top aides were also arrested and reports say over 3,000 people are being held in Chhatrasal stadium. Now protests are exploding across the country.

This is a shocking response from the government -- instead of upholding our legal right to fast and protest, and supporting our demands to end corruption, it is clamping down on our democratic rights and illegally arresting our brave non violent leaders.

But we are millions and we are determined to rid this country of repression and corruption. Let's show the government the power of people power. Sign the urgent petition to Free Anna and Free India of Corruption now and send this to everyone:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/free_anna/?vl

Today we all have a choice -- stand by and watch the government stifle our democracy, or join this national movement to free India from the poison of corruption. Let's make sure we all stand on the right side of history -- join the urgent call to Free Anna and Free India of Corruption now.

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Shibayan, Alice, Pascal and the entire Avaaz team

Monterey: Bugatti Veyron L'Or Blanc drips exclusivity

Posted about 20 hours ago by rovenlunger to rovenlunger's posterous

At first glance, this Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport appears to be one of those special chrome-clad customs giving off a series of strange, wavy reflections from a series of overhead lights. Upon closer inspection, however, that's not the light playing tricks on you - it's the two-tone finish, which looks like it's been spread across the Veyron L'Or Blanc by a cake baker's frosting knife.
This one-off "white gold" Grand Sport is the result of Bugatti working with Germany's Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur , a centuries-old porcelain producer based in Berlin. In addition to the special two-tone paint, pieces of ceramic trim have been fitted to the car's exterior, and the fragile, creamy white stuff is slathered inside of this €1.65 missile, too.
The Veyron L'Or Blanc was first shown in late June at KPM's operations before being brought to America for display at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering in Monterey.
No word yet on whether this particular car has found a buyer, but given Bugatti's penchant for creating a seemingly endless stream of "limited-edition" Veyrons, we're confident they'll find a way to build you one if you flash them enough cash.

Where not to spend your bank holiday: a guide to Britain's worst days out

Posted about 19 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

Crap Days Out celebrates the worst tourist traps Britain has to offer ? but having a miserable bank holiday weekend is as British as half-cut morris dancers, says co-author Gareth Rubin
"And that's Stonehenge!" I announced. "Is it?" replied Maria. "It's a bit small and rubbish, isn't it?" "Yes," I said proudly. "It is."
It was the August bank holiday three years ago and I was showing my Polish girlfriend one of the jewels of Britain's heritage. She was, undeniably, right.
Because Stonehenge, so far as you can tell from the distant perimeter rope where the public are kept back like undesirables outside a feast, sums up quite a lot about British tourist attractions: they are always smaller than you expect and usually a bit rubbish.
Where America has Disneyland, Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty, we have nudist beaches in Scotland, the William and Kate walking tour and the Premier Inn honeymoon package. Yet, for some reason, it is their lack of ambition that makes us rather proud of them. Standing with Maria, who was looking somewhere between disappointed and contemptuous, I realised that what was needed was a guide to Britain's worst tourist attractions. On the sullen, silent train journey home I came up with Crap Days Out.
After months of subjecting myself to waxworks exhibitions, "destination" shopping malls and Britain's only museum of creationism, however, I realised that documenting the very worst that Britain has to offer was a job too big for one man. So I roped in my ex-flatmate, Jon Parker. We bought more than 30 guide books to Britain, joined internet forums and scoured the websites of town councils, sporting bodies and local historical associations to track down the obscure one-room museum as well as the big-name theme park. Over the course of a year we visited too many to remember ? there are more than 200 days out in the book, ranging from "ludicrous" to "how can they sleep at night?" ? and had a generally miserable time.
Mostly when I explained the project to people they would become very excited and ask if we were including the horrific local attraction that had blighted their childhood. Had it not been for tip-offs I would never have heard of the Isle of Wight garlic festival or the Isle of Man's Old House of Keys. Indeed, it became clear that the very words "Isle of" had a certain portent about them. They came to suggest a sense of proud localism that dried up on the mainland 100 years ago when people started moving to other counties for work, rather than other villages. That Wight is so proud of its output of Allium sativum makes you wonder why the maids of Kent no longer exult in hop harvests, or the men of Harlech sing no more of defending Wales against Norman invaders.
The attractions generally fell into two camps: awful by accident or awful by design. It is not Edinburgh's fault that Hogmanay rolls around at the coldest part of the year in one of the chilliest parts of Britain; it certainly is Madame Tussauds' fault that it charges nearly ?30 for an adult ticket to view what amount to novelty candles, making the attraction one of the few places where a slow-burning fire would be welcome.
Statistical analysis proves that London, unsurprisingly, is the epicentre of the deliberately evil camp. It is the capital's stranglehold on tourism that enables Buckingham Palace to charge taxpayers, who are already paying for the upkeep of the state rooms, up to ?65 to see their money being spent on corgis. The most accidentally disappointing region turned out to be the south-west, with the Somme-like conditions of the Glastonbury festival competing avidly with the Cerne Abbas Giant hill carving ? which is invisible unless you are 130ft tall ? and the curious optimism of the Bournemouth sewage works tour.
Scotland, however, is the surprise success story of the book, punching above its weight with around 20 entries. It even crosses into the territory of imaginary attractions, enticing thousands of people each year to spend days sitting beside Loch Ness trying to spot something that they know doesn't exist.
Among the dross we also found a few gems. The museum of creationism was the Genesis Expo in Portsmouth. It provided a fascinating insight into a system of belief that gets short shrift in the mainstream press. It is wrong to base opinions purely on prejudice, so it was pleasing to visit and have all my prejudices confirmed by evidence.
I also became strangely fond of Birmingham's Wattelisk. Surely one of the oddest ways imaginable to commemorate a 19th-century engineer who helped drive the industrial revolution is to produce a statue of him in the form of a large stone totem pole. But that didn't stop the visionary sculptor behind this piece of extraordinary silliness dedicated to James Watt. It might be just what Watt would have wanted ? but then again it might not.
There were also some places we were unable to visit. We wanted to go to the Lapland New Forest theme park. It had, however, shut down six days after opening and by the time we were writing the book its owners were being successfully prosecuted for misleading the public and making hundreds of children cry. Instead we had to rely on eyewitness accounts, such as that from one woman who told the press: "Two fake large plastic polar bears were hidden behind a chain link fence, the nativity scene was a large picture far across an inaccessible muddy field and the majority of the food was out of fairground vans selling frozen burgers. I thought this was the introduction, I didn't realise I was inside."
The raw experiences of our visits were supplemented with painful, until-then-suppressed memories from childhood of being stuck in bank holiday traffic for hours with the distant promise of seeing half-cut morris men stagger about a village fete. Again, talking to people over the year, it became apparent that these were shared experiences that cut across geography, social class and age, proving an underlying national unity far stronger than that seen at all the royal weddings of the past 100 years put together.
Overall, though, we tried not to make the book too nasty ? it gets nasty at times, but mostly when the attraction itself is a bit nasty. Really we were documenting something about Britain: the fact that it's smaller than you think and often a bit rubbish. But it keeps smiling while it's bumbling along without a great deal of ambition.

Jules Birch on the functional benefits of beauty water

Posted about 17 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

For many, the first time the phrase ?beauty water? was heard was when Works with Water launched ready to drink Beauty Water in 2006.

Bill Bruce talks to Works with Water Nutraceuticals? Jules Birch.
?Works with Water and ready to drink Beauty Water were a cover story for Beverage Innovation, and in the 2008 Water Innovation Awards. What made you move away from RTD and opt for soluble supplements?
Jules Birch: As we required aseptic production (and there are limited contract manufacturers in the UK with aseptic production facilities), we either had to source a partner in mainland Europe or look for a solution where we had greater control over production and quality.
Customer feedback indicated people were buying our products for their health benefits. For example, consumers who were not necessarily bottled water purchasers were buying our blood pressure spring water specifically for the blood pressure maintenance benefit. So, allowing them to add our soluble formulations to their beverage was a logical solution.
The Help range works in three areas: helping to manage blood pressure, cholesterol and improve the skin. Please explain the science and target audience behind them.
Birch: Help: Blood Pressure?s target audience is for those diagnosed with elevated blood pressure or with a history of hypertension or heart problems in the family. The key ingredient, lactotripeptides, reduces the chemical that causes blood vessels to narrow and constrict.
Help: Cholesterol is again for anyone with an elevated cholesterol count and/or have a history within the family. This formulation contains barley beta glucan, which interferes with the absorption of cholesterol from the gut and reduces re-absorption of cholesterol made in the liver.
Help: Clear Skin can do exactly that if you suffer from acne. Unlike blood pressure or cholesterol, that are essentially ?invisible? problems unless diagnosed, acne and spots are all too visible and our target customers range from teens to 30+ sufferers who are seeking natural alternatives to topical treatments and prescription medication. The key ingredient is rich in lactoferrin and helps limit the growth of acne bacteria due to its antimicrobial effect.
You?ve achieved some impressive listings and strong online presence, but do consumers understand and trust the claims made by functional products?
Birch: Unfortunately, there is definitely a suspicion that many claims are ?too good to be true?. And yet, many are looking to maintain health naturally and seeking alternatives to prescription medication. So, it?s important that the consumer understands the science behind the claims, has confidence in claims approval, and that the health benefit is worth the purchase.
Health and functional claims are under the regulatory and media microscope more than ever. Are there challenges ahead in proving or justifying claims? Could the industry and its suppliers do more to make health, beauty and anti-ageing drinks better accepted?
Birch: Well, this is where EFSA opinions are supposed to cut through the confusion across claims. The remit and aims are laudable, but the confusion remains. We?re just hoping that sanity and clear thinking prevail for the good of our industry and the consumer.
Niche categories always attract ?me-too? products. Are you surprised how few functional waters with beauty and anti-ageing claims have hit the shelves?
Birch: Not really, given our experience of finding the right contract manufacturer to handle complex ingredients in such an unforgiving vehicle as water. That?s probably the reason for the plethora of vitamin waters we've seen during the past few years.
In our experience, consumers seeking beauty/anti-ageing benefits in a bottled water are looking for a clear, clean presentation and mouthfeel. They definitely don?t want a beverage with strong flavours and a high sweetness level.
Which innovations in packaged water have interested you and do you see any trends emerging?
Birch: I?m interested in those delivering benefits in a user-friendly format such as the quick-release caps. However, there are limitations with regards to fill-capacity to enable sufficient dose delivery, so development work on these is ongoing.
What's next for Works with Water?
Birch: We?re still exploring the opportunities in RTD. However, our latest new product development is in the area of water-based gels in a form-fill-seal delivery. Launching in Boots and Waitrose in the UK this month, they're causing a stir with buyers, and we hope consumers embrace them with the same fervour.

Hi there. My name is Andy, I'm 39 and was born in the City of Sheffield over here in England. I started modelling when I was 8yrs old and, apart from a two yr hiatus, have been modelling ever since. Started on aircraft and although I tried other kit subjects I eventually progressed onto cars, which I have been doing ever since. My first car kit was the 1:24 scale Tamiya Mini Cooper, but it didn't go well and I no longer have it although I have bought 3 such kits since.

A Chocolate And Tahini Tart For Mikey

Posted about 15 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

I woke up Monday morning to the sad news that Jennie Perillo's husband Mikey had passed away hours before. Suddenly, just like that, he was gone. The news left me paralyzed. I didn't know Mikey personally, but I thought about Jennie, their girls, and their family. I put myself in their shoes and could feel the pain almost as mine.
And today in Mikey's memory, the blogsphere is filling up with love-filled peanut butter pies -- his favorite. In Jennie's words "make a peanut butter pie this Friday and share it with someone you love. Then hug them like there's no tomorrow because today is the only guarantee we can count on"
We will be doing that with this chocolate and tahini mousse tart. No peanut butter in our pantry, but it doesn't matter, as it's all about love and what we are and what we have now -- Right now.

Our love goes to you and your family Jennie. You know Mikey is smiling.
Gluten-Free Chocolate and Tahini Tart
Makes a 7-inch tart
Chocolate Pastry
1 cup (140 g) superfine brown rice flour
2 Tbs (20 g) potato starch
2 Tbs (15 g) tapioca starch
2 Tbs (10 g) Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
8 Tbs (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and diced
1/2 cup (125 ml) ice cold water
Place the first five ingredients in the food processor and pulse a couple of times to combine. Add the butter and pulse 10 times until the butter is cut into pea-size pieces. Add the ice water while pulsing. You might not need all of it so reserve a couple of tablespoons. The dough will not form a ball, but should stick together when pressed but not be too wet.
Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap and flatten it a bit with your hand. Refrigerate the dough for about 1 hour.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4 to 1/8-inch thickness and fill the tart mold with it. If the dough cracks, don't worry, just pinch it back together. It might happen if it's too cold. Return the tart mold to the refrigerator for another 20 minutes.
Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Cover the pastry with a piece of parchment paper and fill it with pie weights or dry beans. Bake for 20 minutes, remove parchment and beans, and finish baking for another 8 minutes. Let the tart cool.

Chocolate and Tahini Mousse
10 ounces (300 g) bittersweet chocolate, I used 64%
1 Tbs tahini
1 1/2 cups (375 ml) heavy cream
In a heatproof bowl, melt the chocolate and tahini together over a water bath. Let it cool to room temperature.
Whip the heavy cream to soft peaks. Add the cooled chocolate into the cream and fold together until smooth. Work quickly and make sure not to over fold it over the mousse will break. Transfer the mousse to a pastry bag fitted with a plain tip and fill the tart mold, or simple spoon the mousse into the mold.
Chill the tart for 30 minutes and serve.

This is Serious!

This incident happened recently in North Texas .
A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke
which she put into the refrigerator of the boat.
On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis.
This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass.
Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and
hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances.
It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part
of all soda cans before drinking out of them.
The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e.). full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Gaetano Marano 12:18am Jul 11 - can TOURISTS (or scientists) be sent aboard an X-15 (dropped by a B-52) to 62+ miles of altitude??? - clearly they CAN'T since it's TOO DANGEROUS also for a test pilot!!! - well, despite the fashionable look of their internal, all the suborbital spacecrafts like the SS2 dropped by a WK2 are EXACTLY the SAME of the experimental and dangerous X-15 dropped by the B-52 - so, the FAA absolutely NEVER CAN APPROVE this kind of experimental and dangerous suborbital vehicles for COMMON TOURISTS ... unless ... the FAA (as does the Press) will close both eyes about the BIG risks of this new business ... - - the feathering mechanism is one of the MOST DANGEROUS part of the VERY dangerous SS2 and its main design flaw since it's a MECHANICAL (then, with an high risk of failure) device, but, on which, the two pilots and six passengers MUST rely to come back to Earth alive! - just imagine if it doesn't work on descend with the unbraked SS2 that BURNS in the atmosphere OR if the SS2 engine stops work at half the ascent and the SS2 that falls back with its tanks still full of propellants and the feathering mechanism not able to brake a too heavy SS2 that falls at high speed crashing and exploding on land OR with the movable ends of the wings, in feather mode, that will be detached at the reentry in the dense atmosphere due to the too high weight and speed of the SS2 - or imagine if, after a successful ascent and reentry, the feathering mechanism doesn't work turning back to the gliding mode OR if only half of the wings will turns to glide mode and the SS2 will go to stall, falling and spinning at high speed like a propeller until it crashes on land! - and the same (and worse) thing could happen if only half of the feathering mechanism will work well, after the SS2 has reached 62 miles, with the vehicle that will spin at high speed until it will burn in the atmosphere! - View Post on Facebook · Edit Email Settings · Reply to this email to add a comment. Google+ for Android app (hands-on)

Google+ for Android app (hands-on)
via Engadget by Brad Molen on 6/30/11

Given the number of apps Google's made available for smartphones, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that it's taken its suite of social networking services direct to the mobile world as well. As soon as Google+ was officially announced , an app was ready for download in the Android Market and a web app became available for Safari for iOS (with its full offering to the App Store coming soon). As usual, we couldn't resist the urge to play around with it , but how does the mobile iteration fare against the competition? Continue past the break to get a peek of the larger-than-life service squeezed into a 4.3-inch (or smaller) display.

Facebook More Hated Than Banks, Utilities

Facebook More Hated Than Banks, Utilities
via Slashdot by CmdrTaco on 6/30/11
jfruhlinger writes "According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, Facebook raises a lot of ire among its customers - more than Bank of America or AT&T Mobility. This bodes ill for the company - as blogger Chris Nerney points out, many of the others on the most-hated list are utilities and other companies with monopolies, which can hold customers despite bad service. At least Facebook edged out MySpace." Unsurprisingly, the most important thing about Google+ is that it's not Facebook.

New Documents Raise More Questions About Safety Of TSA Scanners

New Documents Raise More Questions About Safety Of TSA Scanners
via Techdirt by Mike Masnick on 6/30/11
Last year, we noted that the TSA appeared to be misleading the public in stating that its new more intrusive scanners were safe. This didn't mean that the machines weren't safe -- but that the TSA was, at the very least, massively exaggerating the claims that they had scientific support to say that the machines definitely were safe. Earlier this year, there were further worries, when reports came out showing that some of the machines were giving off much more radiation than they were supposed to.
Now, EPIC, which is in an ongoing lawsuit to try to get these scanners banned, is claiming that via a FOIA request, they have new evidence that the TSA has been misleading people about the risks of the scanners. The documents show that Homeland Security boss Janet Napolitano blatantly misrepresented a NIST study in a USA Today OpEd, to claim that the scanners were safe. NIST, however, quickly contacted DHS, saying that it was "concerned" about the piece misrepresenting what it had said:
* NIST does not do product testing
* NIST did not test AIT machines for safety
* NIST measured the dose of a single machine and compared it against the standard Apparently, NIST told DHS to stop misrepresenting its work, and suggested that if DHS agreed, then it wouldn't call for USA Today to run a correction on the piece.
Separately, another document shows that TSA employees in Boston raised serious concerns to officials, claiming that there was evidence of a "cancer cluster" among TSA agents in Boston. The union asked the TSA to provide agents with dosimeters that could be clipped onto uniforms in order to measure the radiation to make sure the machines were safe. Agents in Atlanta apparently also expressed concerns and asked for dosimeters. The TSA refused, noting that it was already running some tests, and the tests showed no radiation problems.
This document is receiving a lot of attention, but I don't find it quite as damning as most. People just claiming that they believe there's a heightened cancer risk is not really evidence or fact. It would be more interesting if there was actual data to support that, rather than just anecdotal evidence. Still, I think it's becoming increasingly clear that the TSA, at the very least, exaggerated the claims of how much scientific support there is that these machines are safe. That's the part that bugs me. They could easily allow for much more testing of the machines, but don't seem that interested in it, preferring instead to mislead the public, a la Napolitano interview.

Spamming Becoming Financially Unfeasable
via Slashdot by samzenpus on 6/30/11
itwbennett writes "Making money in spam isn't as easy as it used to be. 'It's not something financially feasible for anyone to even consider,' said Robert Soloway, who in his heyday made $20,000/day as a spammer. 'Spam - the Internet's original sin - dropped for the first time ever at the end of 2010,' writes IDG News Service's Robert McMillan. 'In September, Cisco System's IronPort group was tracking 300 billion spam messages per day. By April, the volume had shrunk to 34 billion per day, a remarkable decline.' Soloway says spam filters have become too good."

Man Boards Flight Using Someone Else's Expired Boarding Pass

Posted about 18 hours ago by joelpomales to joelpomales's posterous

Man Boards Flight Using Someone Else's Expired Boarding Pass
via The Consumerist by Chris Morran on 6/30/11

Last week, a Nigerian man was able to board a Virgin America flight from NYC to L.A. without presenting valid ID and a boarding pass that not only didn't belong to him, but was for a flight from the previous day.
According to CBS, the passenger went unnoticed until a flight attendant did an in-flight check of the seats and spotted him in a seat that should have been empty. He showed the attendant the boarding pass, which belonged to a traveler who claimed it had gone missing on his way to the airport the day before, and a college ID.
The man was questioned by authorities in Los Angeles and then released. But his story doesn't end there.
From CBS:
Days later, investigators say he went back to LAX and tried to board a Delta flight to Atlanta.
This time, he was searched and airport officials found 10 expired boarding passes in his bag , none of them in his name.
Meanwhile, the TSA is downplaying the incident, saying that the plane was safe because the passenger had been screened before heading to the gate.
"Every passenger that passes through security checkpoints is subject to many layers of security including thorough physical screening at the checkpoint," said a rep for the agency. "TSA's review of this matter indicates that the passenger went through screening."
But isn't part of the screening to check a person's ID against the boarding pass? If the screeners missed the fact that his boarding pass was for the wrong person and date, what else didn't they notice while he strolled through security?

Fuel Mileage Increases with Consumer Demands; 'Start-Stop' Technology Saves Fuel and Boosts Fuel Efficiency

Posted about 15 hours ago by MI Auto Times to MI Auto Times

There are many different technologies that have been developed to create better fuel mileage for vehicles. From entire hybrid engines to increased aerodynamics, automakers are working to create as efficient of a vehicle as they can.
DETROIT, M.I. - Fuel mileage will continue to be an area of improvement until perhaps one day all vehicles are emission free and earn more than 100 mpg. This may be a futuristic idea, or it may be reality in some form, but the higher the fuel mileage the higher the efficiency and the fewer the trips to the pump.
[Rewind: Fuel Mileage May Reach Beyond 200 MPG, But Production of X-Prize Winners Isn't Likely]
Automakers recognize the need for new technologies as the newest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) mandate requires all vehicles to have a minimum of 35.5 mpg by 2016. With these expectations, more technologies are being created or simply added to more models in a fleet, such as the start-stop technology that can be found in General Motors eAssist technology.
It has been estimated that anywhere between five to 12 percent can be saved on fuel mileage when a vehicle is equipped with start-stop technology.
The eAssist technology created by GM uses this feature to add even more efficiency to its 2012 Buick LaCrosse and Buick Regal models. The start-stop technology will automatically shut-off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, such as when waiting at a red light, and seamlessly restarts once the accelerator is pressed.
According to a press release by GM about the eAssist technology, the stocked Ecotec eAssist engine is built so that the motor-generator unit continues to spin along with the engine to deliver an immediate and smooth take-off power when the driver presses on the accelerator. The electric-driven transmission oil pump also keeps the 6T40 transmission primed and the fluid flowing when the engine shuts down to a stop, so once the accelerator is pressed, the transmission begins to work as flawlessly as the engine.
"It's a very integrated powertrain system, with no compromises in driving performance, shift quality or ride and handling," said Daryl Wilson, LaCrosse lead development engineer. "We believe this combination points to the future of vehicles powered primarily by an internal combustion engine."
Globally, the start-stop technology is expected to be used in anywhere from 52 to 55 percent of new vehicles that will be built in 2016. This percentage is up from the 8 percent in 2010.
Although this technology in more vehicles by 2016 could mean a much higher fuel mileage per vehicle, it is expected that this expansion of the start-stop technology will be another delay to the widescale adoption of pure electric vehicles as the technology offers consumers an alternative source for better fuel mileage than switching over to a hybrid.
Consumers can expect to see more of this technology as the years continue, and automakers like General Motors will continue to offer economically-priced vehicles with comparable options and features of those more expensive full hybrids.
[Rewind: Fuel Mileage Savings Comparison: Mild Hybrid vs. Full Hybrid Vehicles, Proof in Dollar Signs]
New technologies will continue to be added to create a higher fuel mileage and more efficiency, so what will automakers think of next?

Ripen Fruit Faster by Burying it in Rice [Food]

Ripen Fruit Faster by Burying it in Rice [Food]
via Lifehacker by Matthew Rogers on 6/14/11

Burying your fruit in uncooked rice is a quick and easy way to shave a few days off the ripening time. Just take something annoyingly slow to ripen, like a Mango, and drop it into a bin of rice (the same rice already sitting in the kitchen is fine). Don't worry about ruining the rice, it'll be fine unless you forget the fruit's in the bin. More »

SHEDroid Securely Clears Deleted Data on Your Android Phone [Downloads]
via Lifehacker by Matthew Rogers on 6/14/11

Android: Free app SHEDroid really is like a shredder for Android phones. It doesn't perform a "secure delete" on a particular file or folder, but instead securely wipes the supposedly vacant spaces where deleted files used to be listed. If you're wondering why that means anything, it's because deleted files aren't really gone the moment you delete them-they're just not listed anymore. Something needs to be written over the data for it to really be gone, and that's what SHEDroid does with one tap of the finger. More »

In Iceland, constitutions are written on Facebook
via Engadget by Amar Toor on 6/14/11

Ah, Iceland -- home to the Blue Lagoon, Sigur Rós and, most recently, crowdsourced constitutionalism. With its economy still reeling from the 2009 financial crisis, the country has begun hammering away at a brand new constitution, and is asking its online citizenry for help. The draft is being prepared by a democratically elected, 25-member council, but any Icelanders with an internet connection can add their own suggestions, engage in online debates, or follow the proceedings in real-time on Facebook. All suggestions are moderated to weed out the really dumb ones ("FEWER VOLCANOES"), and those approved by the board will be directly added to the draft, due to be completed at the end of this month. It's a fascinating social experiment, but one that could probably only happen in a place where nearly 90 percent of all households have a broadband connection, two-thirds of the entire population is on Facebook -- meaning their politician's are always within poke's reach.

Michigan Lincoln Dealers Need Mercury Incentives; Mercury Owners Disappointed

Posted about 20 hours ago by MI Auto Times to MI Auto Times

Michigan_lincoln_dealers_unable_to_serve_mercury_owners_with_trade-in_incentives When Ford Motor Corp discontinued the Mercury brand, Mercury owners may have expected to have more incentives to switch brands than have been offered.
DETROIT, M.I. - Michigan Lincoln dealers and Ford dealers knew there would be Mercury owners who would want to switch over to a new brand as soon as the Mercury brand was discontinued, but what dealerships have been able to offer this forgotten group of buyers has been inadequate at best according to some local dealers.
It appeared as though Ford Motor Corp decided to not offer any real incentives for owners to switch over to Lincoln and therefore remain part of the blue oval family. It seemed only after Lincoln sales dropped in January that Ford Motor Corp decided to offer Mercury owners some kind of incentive.
Although as a whole Ford Motor Corp rose 13.2 percent in January, the sales for Lincoln vehicles dropped 21 percent from the year before. Last year 7,036 units were sold while this year saw only 5,558 units sold in January.
Michigan Lincoln dealers and other dealers in the Midwest were given the go from Ford Motor Corp to offer two incentives from mid-February to April 4. The incentives for Mercury owners included:
·         $500 toward the purchase of a new Ford vehicle
·         $1,500 toward buying a new Lincoln vehicle
Other than the cash incentives there was only one other incentive that was offered: Mercury lessees could take advantage of an early lease termination. According to Paul Haldeman of the Haldeman Ford-Lincoln dealership in Allentown, Pa., there should be more incentives for customers to keep them loyal to the brand.
Haldeman stated in a letter to Automotive News, "I can attest to the tragic manner in which Ford has handled (or mishandled) the discontinuation of Mercury and the loyal Mercury customers."
Haldeman also said that customers ask when Ford will offer a special Mercury trade-in incentive, but he has no reply adding in his letter, "It's no surprise that our former loyalists are moving to import products."
Michigan Lincoln dealers and Ford dealers may be having a harder time keeping their customers with no incentives since April 4, but without the backing from Ford Motor Corp, dealers are unable to satisfy their customers need to trade-in. As 4.3 million new Mercury vehicles were sold over the past 15 years, there are plenty of owners that have the possibility to switch over to a Lincoln or Ford vehicle and it seems that Ford Motor Corp should take advantage of the numbers.

Fuel Mileage Savers: Is a Full Hybrid Vehicle Really a Smarter Financial Move?

Posted about 16 hours ago by MI Auto Times to MI Auto Times

MI Auto Times is asking the question many buyers may be asking themselves: Should they spend the extra money on a full hybrid vehicle or is there a better, more fuel-efficient option that will save them more money?

DETROIT, M.I. - Fuel mileage is an unavoidable topic during these recent months of higher gas prices, but is a hybrid vehicle the best solution for consumers in need of an economical answer to their shrinking wallets?
The answer, as MI Auto Times discovered, may surprise car buyers.
MI Auto Times chose to evaluate General Motors' latest technology set to debut in its 2012 Buick LaCrosse and Regal models in order to see how these mild hybrids work and what type of fuel mileage they'll provide to consumers.
MI Auto Times has posted its findings on its website which include:
·         how new legislation is putting the pressure on automakers to deliver vehicles with better fuel mileage
·         fuel-saving vehicle options available today and their feasibility
·         a full explanation about eAssist, the new mild hybrid technology created by GM
·         an investment savings comparison of hybrid vehicle cost savings and mild hybrid cost savings
Those interested in buying vehicles such as the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid or the Lexus HS 250 Hybrid may be interested to know that though their combined fuel economy is higher than average vehicles, their fuel-savings is not what it appears when price is factored into the equation.
There is not just one solution to better fuel mileage; and with a complete investment comparison provided by MI Auto Times, it may be easier for shoppers to see the difference between a mild hybrid and full hybrid. Visit http://www.miautotimes.com/fuel-mileage to learn more.
