SAIC Loses Data of 4.9 Million Patients

SAIC Loses Data of 4.9 Million Patients
via Slashdot by Unknown Lamer on 10/4/11
An anonymous reader writes "Government contractor SAIC just can't seem to get a break. Still fresh off of the Citytime scandal they have now had a data breach where backup tapes of 4.9 Million personnel health records were stolen from an employee's car. To add insult to injury, evidently the tapes were not encrypted either: 'Tricare did not indicate whether SAIC encrypted the information on the stolen tapes, but Raley said, "It's very hard to encrypt a backup tape."'"

The Original Siri App Gets Pulled From The App Store, Servers Killed

The Original Siri App Gets Pulled From The App Store, Servers Killed
via TechCrunch by Greg Kumparak on 10/4/11
siri
Long before today's announcement that the Siri Voice Assistant would be an integral part of iOS, Siri was a third-party app. It wasn't as pretty, and not nearly as well integrated, but it had one big advantage: it ran on just about any iOS device.
Then Apple bought Siri . It immediately became clear that Apple was making a push into voice - and yet, the app stayed on the store. It lived on un-updated, but it lived on nevertheless. Then Apple introduced Siri. exclusively for the iPhone 4S.
And with that, the life of Siri (the application) came to an end, making way for Siri (the feature).

For something that most would never notice, the pull down was masterfully choreographed: when Siri was first mentioned on stage, the application was still easily available. By the time the demonstration was over, the app was no where to be found - and unfortunately for the folks who might have already nabbed Siri in the past year or so (or worse yet, those who have come to consider Siri a part of their everyday lives), it appears as if the servers that Siri (the app) relies on were shut down at the same time.
So, why take it down? Two reasons come to mind. For one, it's pretty tough to up-sell current iPhone 4 owners to the iPhone 4S if one of the biggest features is already available (albeit to a limited extent) as a third-party app. Less nefariously, having a third-party app (especially one that hadn't been updated in around a year) available with the same name as a feature would be beyond confusing. If it were solely about avoiding confusion, though, why pull down the server for those who already have the app?

Apple Stock Drops 5 Percent After The iPhone 5 Fails To Appear

Posted about 19 hours ago by joelpomales to joelpomales's posterous

Apple Stock Drops 5 Percent After The iPhone 5 Fails To Appear
via TechCrunch by Leena Rao on 10/4/11
AAPL
Investors were not blown away by Tim Cook Apple event today. With no news of the iPhone 5 at today's Apple event, the Cupertino-based company is seeing its stock drop in value. Apple's stock opened at $374.57, and dipped as low as $355 in intraday trading before starting to rebound. The stock dropped nearly 20 points after Apple didn't reveal the much awaited (and hyped) iPhone 5.
Instead, Apple debuted the iPhone 4S , which looks a lot like the iPhone 4, but includes a new processor, a CDMA/GSM chip that makes it a world phone and a new camera. Plus, it will be available via Sprint now (but this isn't an exclusive deal, as previously reported).
Apple's stock has been performing particularly well over the past few months, passing $400 for the first time in late July. Apple hit a high of $422 in September.
The level the stock is at right now still gives Apple around a $330 billion market cap, so investors are still doing just fine. And the company revealed some staggering stats around Apple's dominance in the music, mobile device, and app economies. But some of what was revealed today was announced earlier this summer at the company's WWDC developer conference, including an in-depth Twitter integration . Clearly, today, investors were hoping for a major surprise. But then, you can never please Wall Street.

Massa threatened with jail over team orders

Brazil?s F1 fever may have overstepped the mark after a local prosecutor threatened Felipe Massa with a six-year jail term if he ?defrauds? the sporting public by letting Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso past at Sunday?s grand prix. The story, reported by a local paper and picked up by the Daily Telegraph , is the latest of several anti-Massa reports to emerge from his home country since the team orders controversy at the German Grand Prix earlier this year. The Daily Telegraph's Tom Cary reckons that Massa simply isn't living up to his home crowd's high expectations. ?A public raised on a diet of Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna were simply appalled and saddened in equal measure by Massa?s apparent lack of ambition.?

RLPO/Petrenko ? review

Posted about 7 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

Liverpool Cathedral
Temporarily forsaking Philharmonic Hall for Liverpool Cathedral , Vasily Petrenko 's RLPO Mahler cycle has reached the Eighth Symphony, a piece that can be worryingly venue-sensitive. You could argue that the vast spaces of this extraordinary building strike a chord with a work that strives for cosmic completeness. But the cathedral has a seven-second echo that can play havoc with music.
This is a shame, because the performance touched on magnificence. Petrenko came closer than most to solving the disparities in tone between the two movements by presenting them as antithetical. The first was earthly, clamorous, and tinged with that brutality that Petrenko has unearthed in Mahler before, while the second was otherworldly, awestruck and ecstatic. The breakneck speeds at the start formed a drastic contrast with those bizarrely beautiful moments later on when Mahler attempts to reconcile movement and stasis in the extended exploration of sustained harmonies.
But the acoustic also affected how we heard it. The second movement more or less survived the reverberation, but the first did not, with the counterpoint of the development section most detrimentally affected. No less than seven choirs were assembled, and while the bite, pungency and rapture of their singing was more than apparent, too much detail vanished into a kind of aural fog. Apart from Mario Luperi's rather wobbly Pater Profundus, the soloists were outstanding, with first soprano Claudia Barainsky doing fabulous things with her top Cs. There was a standing ovation at the end, to which Petrenko responded by repeating the final chorus ? the first time, in my experience, that part of a Mahler symphony has ever been encored.
Rating: 4/5

Five ways to improve F1

Posted about 7 hours ago by zappanicoxs52g to zappanicoxs52g's posterous

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images
In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

A Day With Apricots And A Few Days Off

Posted about 3 hours ago by kimtopps to kimtopps's posterous

I woke up Friday morning feeling lighter.
"Did you know I am finished photographing all the recipes from the book?" I asked C. Yes, I was. I am. And it feels wonderful. I am sure as time passes and I revisit the same recipes and images over and over again, there will be many changes I will want to make, but for not, this is it.
I still have quite a bit of writing to do, but as of this week, I am a month away from turning in my manuscript. I can't even tell you how exciting that is for me.

When I woke up Friday, I decided my weekend would start early. C. and Jon had made plans on their own, so I was going to have Miren all to myself. We were going to have alone time, which doesn't happen often.

We took a walk to the park early, before the scourging sun made an appearance. Unfortunately, that didn't last very long. The heat forced us back inside.
I prepared a light pea soup (a variation of this one ) that we ate with Idiazabal and radish tartines.
"Miren, jaten!" I let her know. It was time to come to the table for lunch. She runs and climbs on her chair ready to eat.

In the afternoon, as she napped, I made a batch of shortbreads , coconut rice pudding , and this gluten and dairy free apricot and pistachio clafoutis.
I took time to photograph and organize all my images while I listened to music (obsessing over this as of late). It was nice and quiet, just what I needed.
"Ama!" I heard coming from upstairs. Miren was up. She was ready for my clafoutis.

This week, the kids and I are flying to Vermont to see my friend Nadia and her new farm. There will be fresh air, beautiful scenery, and lots of blueberry picking. I cannot wait.
I will be back soon.
Enjoy.

Gluten and Dairy Free Apricot and Pistachio Clafoutis
Makes a 10-inch deep dish
1/4 cup (40 g) shelled and unsalted pistachios
3 tablespoons (25 g) cornstarch
3 eggs
1/2 cup (100 g) natural cane sugar
1/2 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
1 1/4 cup unsweetened full-fat coconut milk
1 tablespoon melted ghee or coconut oil
6 apricots, halved and pit removed
Preheat oven to 400F (200C). Grind the pistachios and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch together in the food processor to a fine powder.
Whisk together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla seeds. Whisk in the pistachio powder and rest of cornstarch until smooth. Add coconut milk and melted ghee.
Grease your dish. Arrange the apricot halves around the dish and pour custard over.
Bake for 30 minutes or until center is set.
