General Motors is not only investing in the future with greener technology, but GM is also investing in American workers by adding 4,000 jobs in eight U.S. states. MI car dealers are proud to see the progress and to share the news with customers.
DETROIT, M.I. – MI car dealers may have heard the announcement Tuesday as General Motors prepared to create more jobs across eight states, which would add up to 4,000 new and retained jobs for plant workers. Along with new jobs, General Motors is using solar power to create efficiency at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
Creating Jobs
General Motors CEO, Dan Akerson, announced the corporation would be investing $2 billion into 17 plants that span eight states in the Midwest. Of the 4,000 jobs that will be available, MI car dealers are happy to hear 2,653 will be in Michigan alone.
General Motors has also announced that it will first offer the available positions to 1,350 workers who had recently been laid off before adding any new workers to the plant lines across the eight states.
The 4,000 jobs will be divided among GM properties as follows:

·         Detroit-Hamtramck will get up to 2,500 jobs

·         Toledo and Bowling Green, Ky will get 250 available positions

·         Saginaw, MI will receive 50 plant jobs

·         Warren Tech Center in Michigan will have up to 25 jobs

These jobs are on top of the 1,000 engineers that GM is hiring to work on electric vehicles in Michigan.
At the engine plant in Flint, MI, General Motors is investing $80 million to increase production of the engine that is stocked in the Chevrolet Volt and Chevrolet Cruze, which will create 60 jobs for factory workers.  Also, the engine and transmission parts factory in Bay City, MI will receive $20 million as well as 18 positions available.
At this point, there are still more than 10 plants that MI car dealers have not heard any announcement about. GM may be making more announcements as the week continues.
It has been predicted by Sean McAlinden, a Senior Economist for the Center for Automotive Research, that the Detroit Three could add as many as 35,000 new jobs by 2015, with most of them landing in Michigan.
Solar Panels and Other Automaker Green Initiatives
MI car dealers have heard General Motors has officially broke ground as the corporation is planning to build solar panels on six acres in front of its Detroit-Hamtramck plant. The goal is to not only produce one of the most efficient vehicles, the Chevrolet Volt, but to create a more green production process as the popular extended-range electric car is produced for higher demand.

"This isn't only going green for green's sake," said Bob Ferguson, GM's Vice President of Global Public Policy, in a Detroit Free Press article. "This is about reducing this plant's environmental footprint and reducing our bottom line."

DTE Energy is an energy provider for residential and commercial locations in Michigan and nationwide, and it’s the company that will own and operate the 516-kilowatt system as part of its Solar Currents program. General Motors will see a lower energy bill by $15,000 annually. Also, with changes in more efficient lighting and equipment updates, GM will see energy costs at Detroit-Hamtramck by nearly $3 million annually.
Ford Motor Corp is also working toward more efficiency at its plants and the automaker plans to begin using dandelion roots in cup holders, floor mats and interior trims. The substance that can be extracted from the roots can be used to produce a more sustainable rubber.

“We’re always looking for new sustainable materials to use in our vehicles that have a smaller carbon footprint to produce and can be grown locally,” said Angela Harris, a Ford Research Engineer, in a Ford press release. “Synthetic rubber is not a sustainable resource, so we want to minimize its use in our vehicles when possible. Dandelions have the potential to serve as a great natural alternative to synthetic rubber in our products.”

As for Chrysler, the company has seen a 40 percent efficiency improvement in its lineup and has said that more improvements are on the way. Sixteen Chrysler models have been redesigned or refreshed in just over a one year, while Chrysler is still guiding its business back on track from its bankruptcy.
MI car dealers are sure to see more upgrades and changes from the Detroit Three and across their vehicle lineups as the 2016 Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standard deadline mandated by the federal government approaches Check back with MI Auto Times for continued updates.

GM Flint employees worked together to bring enough donation money to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to cover 90,000 meals. MI car dealers are proud to see fellow GM employees give back to the community in such a big way.
DETROIT, M.I. – MI car dealers may have been humbled to hear the GM Flint Manufacturing Center employees pooled together to raise $15,000 to go to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. The donation is enough to provide 90,000 meals to the local communities. More than 20 Michigan counties will benefit from the donations raised by the Flint employees.
The vice president and director of development for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Kara Ross, had stated in a press release issued to MI Auto Times that the organization has estimated that every dollar donated would equal six meals that could be provided to the community.
About a week ago the employees at the GM Flint Manufacturing Center came together and staged different fundraisers to collect as much charity as possible to help support and donate to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. MI car dealers have noted the collaboration between Flint employees and other organizations such as the United Auto Workers (UAW) was essential in the success of the fundraisers. UAW members from Locals 598, 599 and 659 worked with Flint during the fundraising process.
On May 7 MI car dealers learned representatives from GM’s Professional Managers Network and Women in Manufacturing met with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and presented a check to the organization. At the same time, GM employees sorted food that would be distributed across Michigan.

If you've ever watched daytime -- or really late night -- TV, you're probably quite familiar with Roni "Tax Lady" Deutch, the tax attorney being sued for $34 million by the California attorney general over allegations she defrauded thousands of customers. Well, our TV speakers have gotten a brief reprieve as Deutch announced last week that she has closed her firm and surrendered her law license to the California State Bar.
"It's a sad, miserable day at my law firm," boo-hooed Deutch, who says her firm has $10 million in debt, at a press conference. "I've represented 20,000 taxpayers; 4,000 existing clients will soon be without legal representation.... I am totally, completely broke."
She added, "I am not the monster the attorney general has made me out to be."
The State Bar's Chief Trial Counsel got in a dig at Deutch with this statement to the press: "If, in fact, [Deutch] stops being a licensed lawyer in California, we believe this will help protect the public."
The Sacramento Bee spoke to one former Deutch client who isn't exactly shedding tears about Deutch's woes. "I had just lost my home, my business, everything," she told the Bee. "She took my money and didn't do nothing. My satisfaction would be if they paid my money back... I hope to God they pay my money back - $2,000 is a lot of money."
Deutch's announcement comes only weeks after the AG asked a judge to have her thrown in jail for allegedly destroying documents.
"I wish I had shut the office doors the day after the attorney general sued me," Deutch told the Bee. "There is a receiver running my law firm right now. When a receiver takes over your business, the writing's on the wall."

OverTheGeicoE writes "The Electronic Privacy Information Center reports that the US House of Representatives is trying to cut funding for new airport body scanners from next year's budget. This would prevent the TSA from installing 275 new scanners in airports in FY 2012, at a cost of $76 million." http://bit.ly/mpYJPs" title="Share on Twitter" target="_blank">

A Netflix app finally came out last week for Android, but due to the complications of the plethora of devices running Android, it only came out for a few of them. Netflix says they'll slowly but surely roll out the app to other devices, but if you don't feel like waiting you can do a little cellphone hackery and get it on your phone now.
It involves getting root access to your phone so you'll want to make sure to back it up first as you could end up totally bricking your phone. Once you're over that hump, you can get to downloading the application file directly and installing it on your phone. This Reddit Android community forum has instructions on how to do it.
Hey, one of the main selling points they use for Android devices is how you can tinker with them and make them do your bidding...
